Savannah Training Center Open House Attracts a Diverse Stream of Event Attendees

The Southeastern Carpenters and Southern Millwrights successfully held an open house recently to illustrate our career opportunities to potential recruits, and manpower capabilities to industry partners in the Savannah, Georgia area.

Hundreds of people - ranging from high school and vo-tech students to construction and government officials - got a first-hand look at a wide variety of skills in action, such as scaffolding, interior systems, welding, rigging, and heavy form. The offices, classrooms, and multiple training stations were on display at the Southeastern Carpenters Training facility at 40 Telfair Place, Savannah.

Attendees experienced up-close views of carpenters and millwrights engaged in hands-on training, and were given facts to consider as they make career choices, such as free training, no student loans to pay back, job advancement opportunity, and quality wages.

Industry and government officials, all of whom were given private tours guided by council representatives or other union officials, achieved a greater understanding of the resources available to the local construction industry. Many thanks to the variety of Georgia public officials who attended the event, including members of the Savannah Chatham County School Board; Richard Keatley, candidate for Georgia Labor Commissioner; State School Superintendent Otha Thornton’s representatives; former President of the Savannah Federation of Teachers Local 2069 Alfreda Goldwire and current President Theresa Watson; Savannah Regional Central Labor Council Vice President Christi Hulme; State Senate candidate Sandra Workman, and candidate for Lt. Governor, Sarah Riggs Amico.
